In this literacy block, we start the year with the Norse creation story. The interplay between the cold, still darkness of Nifelheim and the hot active fires of Muspelheim. How the might giant Ymir emerged, the forefather of all beings. How Ygdrassil, the tree of life, spans the nine worlds and how the gods Odin, Thor and Loki came to be.

3-Week Block

The first block begins with our initial introduction to fractions. This work progresses from a tactile representation (clay, paper, food, etc.) to the pictorial and numeric. A creative and step-wise approach is used to understanding the meanings of numerator and denominator, equivalent fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators.

4-Week Block

In the study of the human being and the animal, we begin by briefly looking at the human being in terms of our head, torso, and limbs. We also explore in terms of systems, our nerve/sense system, our rhythmic system of heart and lungs, and our metabolic, muscular system. We turn our attention toward such animals as the eagle, the lion, and the cow, for the qualities they exhibit, among others.

2-Week Block

Form Drawing works to enrich the development of what will later emerge as the intellect. This is through the Celtic woven and braided forms. The image of spinning or following the thread of a thought gives us some idea of the connection of these forms to the new forces of intellect soon to be born. Being able to interweave ideas, to follow the pattern and see how each thread crosses over the other brings a healthy organisation to the thinking.

4-Week Block

In our second Norse block, we continue learning the myths and stories of the inhabitants of the Nine Worlds including the gods and goddesses of Asgard, their deeds, adventures and mischiefs - working to explore polarities.

3-Week Block

In the second block, we will learn about mixed and improper fractions, multiples and factors which lead us to be able to find the greatest common factor, and lowest common multiple in order to work with fractions with different denominators. Lastly, we take an initial look at prime numbers.

4-Week Block

In the second Human & Animal block, we continue studying animals and learn note-taking and continue to expand our skills in composition so that the children will be able to write a report assignment on an animal of their choice.

We will start by looking at how the plant kingdom dwells in a mediating role between the inanimate mineral realm and the mobile realm inhabited by animals and humans, and how the four elements shape and form plant life across the globe in unusual and surprising ways depending on the biome and altitude. We will familiarise ourselves of the basic life cycle of the plant from old seed to new seed and how the different parts of the plant respond a shape this process.

History and Geography are important aspects of environmental studies. It gives knowledge about the immediate world and can give a sense of belonging, from both a social and spatial point of view. This first block will take us on a journey through the rich and varying landscapes of North America pre-settlement, telling the stories, mythology and history of the varying indigenous peoples living throughout this vast and diverse continent.

Geometry is all around us! It is present in the natural world - apparent in the petals of flowers and in the work of honey bees, and in the stars above and the minerals below.
The emphasis of this block is for the children feel and experience the inherent artistic beauty, truth and goodness in geometry, as well as being introduced to the “mathematical language” of geometry while learning to draw geometric forms. To achieve this reverence, the students will not be using instruments or tools, but instead, all work will be completed freehand - this asks the children to take their time, with care and focus.

4-Week Block

This block will start with an overview of the geography of the Indian sub-continent, accompanied by stories of the Gods and Goddesses of ancient India, including the avatars of Vishnu, Krishna’s deeds, stories from the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and the battle of Gods and Asuras, the caste system of ancient Hinduism, the life of Gautama Buddha and the arising of a new impulse in India. Following this, our attention will shift to ancient Persia, focusing on the life of Zarathustra and his teachings: the battle of Light and Darkness, the beginnings of farming and domestication of animals.

3-Week Block

While the emphasis in block one was predominantly looking at the physical geography of North America, block two will build on this knowledge by adding a socio-economic and cultural perspective onto the landscapes of North America. How cities and industries developed from the wealth and variety of resources available, how these brought significant social changes and how new infrastructures around these industries begun to shape the lives of people, both rich and poor, indigenious and settlers.

4-Week Block

The pupils will start by familiarizing themselves with a selection of key geographical features from the regions they are studying, followed by Uruk - the first city in the ancient world, Ancient Mesopotamian contributions to the world and the Epic of Gilgamesh.
The study of ancient Egypt will start by looking at the extraordinary life-giving forces of the mighty Nile river, the myths and Gods of this enduring civilization - Ra, Isis and Osiris, the Pyramids and concluding with a look at the Pharaohs, priests and scribes, everyday life in ancient Egypt.

4-Week Block

In the second Botany block, our focus will be on the vast spectrum of plant life beginning with the simple mosses and lichens, through shrubs and to the glorious trees. At the end of the block, we turn to the wide variety of flowering plants and their relationship to the insect pollinators. We will explore the fundamental polarity between the monocotyledons and the dicotyledons.

4-Week Block

As we approach the end of antiquity and the start of a more modern age, the emphasis will gradually shift from a more mythological world to an increasingly more historic one. Starting with the geography of Greece and Asia Minor accompanied by Greek creation myths and an introduction to the Gods and Goddesses. Following this, the pupils will study the rise of Athens and Sparta and their very different cultural outlooks, the Iliad and the Odyssey, before then turning their attention to the Greek golden age, Greek architecture, sculpture, drama and their philosophers, from Socrates to Aristotle. This block will conclude with the life of Alexander the Great.
